Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide, offering a unique mix of tennis and squash in a highly social and dynamic setting. Whether you're a beginner or just curious about how this sport works, this guide will walk you through the essentials of how padel is played.

The Basics of Padel

Padel is typically played in doubles, meaning two players on each team, making it an ideal sport for friends and families. The game is played on an enclosed court roughly half the size of a tennis court, surrounded by walls made of glass or mesh. These walls are not just for containment—they’re a strategic part of the game!

Rules and Scoring

Padel uses the same scoring system as tennis: points progress from 15, 30, 40, and game, with a tiebreak at six games all. Matches are typically played as the best of three sets.

Serving

  • The serve must be underhand, with the ball hit below waist level.
  • The ball must bounce within the server’s box and land in the diagonally opposite service box.

Playing the Ball

  • Players can hit the ball after it bounces on the ground or directly in the air.
  • The walls are fair game! After the ball bounces on your side, it can rebound off the wall, allowing players to return challenging shots.

Winning Points You win a point if your opponent

  • Fails to return the ball before it bounces twice.
  • Hits the ball into the net or outside the court.
  • Fails to serve correctly.

Key Strategies in Padel

  1. Positioning
Stay close to the net to dominate volleys, but remember to retreat quickly when necessary. Good positioning is key to maintaining control.

  2. Using the Walls
The walls are your allies. Let the ball bounce off the glass to create clever angles for your returns.

  3. Teamwork
Padel relies heavily on coordination with your partner. Communicate effectively to cover the court and set up winning shots.

Why is Padel So Popular?

Padel is easy to pick up and suitable for all ages and skill levels. Its smaller court size and forgiving rules make rallies longer and more enjoyable, promoting social interaction and fun competition.
